Wood is one of the most complex materials to process in the manufacture of writing implements. Due to the extremely low wall thicknesses, it requires a great deal of sensitivity and manual work - each piece of this characterful natural material is unique and "wants" to be treated individually.
Time is the all-important factor here.
Before one of the fine woods can be processed into a fountain pen, it goes through a decades-long drying process. After the tree has been felled, each centimeter of wood must be stored in the fresh air for a year, protected from rain. Frank Pressentin has set up a covered external warehouse for this storage process. The valuable planks and scantlings lie here for 5 - 10 years before they reach the warm studio workshop. There they are processed into smaller scantlings and stored again for 2 - 5 years.
